That is really sad - what a fantastic character. I remember watching him on TV in the John Player league (playing for Gloucestershire), when he had a reputaion as a big-hitting all rounder. However he really came to life as an umpire, with his hopping on one foot whenever a team was on a multiple of 111.

I understand he had been suffering from cancer.

He will be missed

Very sad. The dude was a legend. One of the old skool of umpires. Liked his pints after a day standing in the middle.
