Selling a "repairable" query

I've just got the dreaded news that the gearbox in my 02 1.4 Leon is on the way out, with an estimated repair bill of €1k+. And this not long after having to spend roughly the same after the timing belt went.

I'd been planning on upgrading for a while, and now that I am ready to it seems to be determined to make itself unsaleable and to eat into my upgrade budget. I'm leaning towards thinking that it may be a better idea now to sell it as is, as a repairable, rather than to fix it up and sell it then.

So is this the kind of thing that could sell, and if so how should I price it? I'm thinking something along the lines of taking the price if it was working fine, knock off the cost of the repair and a bit extra again, so for a €1k repair knock off say €1,500 and be prepared to take maybe a little less?

Who gave you a quote to fix it? main dealer or Indy??

It was an indy. The whole gearbox needs to be replaced. I'm sure I could save a bit if I shop around (and I'll ring around a little to check), but I don't think it's going to be a whole lot.

Might be an idea to try sell to a garage as they'll be able to fix it up themselves and sell it on so might not have to discount as much.

To be honest, even with discount not many people are going to want to but a car with a problem.

That seems like a good idea. Anyone know any garages that do this kind of thing?

Try traynors .co.uk if they have a box they'll deliver it to the south. even if you are not going to repair car you can always say to a buyer i can get a secondhand gearbox in traynors for X you might get the whole job done for €400

Thanks, I'd checked their website and they are breaking a few so should have some. I'll give them a call and see how much one would cost.
