I'm planning to revamp my site at the moment and considering using flash in the banners to get an effect like on this site . . .

    http://www.concrawood.ie/
    http://www.concrawood.ie/Fishing

I have little knownledge of flash so would be starting from scratch.
Whats that effect actually called? So I could maybe google for the code. .

It's called "panning", and you can actually achieve it without Flash if you load an image as the background to a div and then animate the background position.

    Thanks Liam.

I can animate the position using CSS?

jQuery (a javascript library) can do this for you. Look at
    http://www.gruppo4.com/~tobia/cross-slide.shtml

It is easy to do in flash too, but javascript is built into browsers - you don't have to rely on your end user having downloaded the flash browser plugin.

You can set the initial position using CSS, and then use JavaScript to animate it.

It's easy to do ( have done it on a few sites, including http://www.textileprint.ie/gallery.php?section=class%20hoodies ); the core jQuery library makes it simple to do.

The "CrossSlide" jQuery add-on/plugin linked above is overkill if the "pan" is all you want to do.....that said, it's got a few other cool options and would make it easier to do if you're a complete newbie.
