A question on graduation and robes

I was having some discussion in the office here with some of my colleagues regarding the significance of robes for graduation and the colouring scheme of such robes.

As it is a while since I graduated :o, can anyone tell me what the deal is with robes - is it generally one colour of trim per faculty, or is it a common colour for the institution and differing robes, depending on level of qualification achieved?
