Have Games Workshop Lost Their Edge?

Seems to me that the quality of the models is in rapid decline, lately.

Credit-crunch problems, possibly? Can't afford to pay their designers, perhaps?

Also... The price has become ridiculous. I'd collect if I had a time machine and could go back ten years.

Any particular ones? Space Hulk was the most recent release and most of what I've seen online say it's the best stuff they've seen from GW. The only really bad ones I've seen are some of the terrain peices, I don't see much of the fantasy stuff though.

quality has improved over the years from what ive seen. Compare plastics from 10 years ago to nowadays.....big difference in quality and modelling options.

As for price, yeah its expensive, but so are most Racham and Privateer Press.

Ther only problem I have with GW is the focus purely on the "big three" and shelving the Specialist Games since I cant be bothered buying and painting hundreds of models for one army, much prefer a dozen I can focus more painting time on.

I agree that the quality of models has actually gotten better, not worse, over the past few years.

However, there's a lot more competition in the market nowadays. With other manufacturers producing, imo, better looking minis than GW.

Infinity, Malifaux, and Helldorado use nicer models than GW. I prefer privateer press models to GW too, but they're not clearly better, it may just be a matter of personal taste.

If you're not feeling GW at the moment, why not try something different? it depends on where you are located, but there's a fair bit of Privateer Press around, and Malifaux is just taking off in Dublin(gamersworld) currently. Those models really are beautiful.

Personally I wouldn't be terribly bothered if they went to far as to scrap two of those three and gave my army of choice some attention!

I like specialist games and all, but when you're not the best player, and your army of choice sets you at a natural disadvantage, you can get a little demoralised.

I thought you played Tau? Paul Quigley played Tau at Gaelcon and got 2nd place at the weekend, he'll also be bringing them to the UKGT and Irish GT. Although the Tau codex needs some attention it can still hold its own.

yeah, i have to say i think the quality is going way up. the posability of the plastic kits, the amount of bitz and extra you get, the dynamism of a lot of the poses...it's all great. only worry i'd have is this possible new trend for showing energy effects (skaven bell/plague furnace, that new orc shaman for LOTR). it looks amazing painted to 'eavy metal standard but what about an average joe? i really don't think i could do something like that justice.

and as for the pricing...well, GW have never exactly been bargain basement. I can't remember the exact pricing from 10+ years ago but they always seemed expensive to me. i assumed they were just keeping in line with the massive inflation over those ten years.

You missed the bit where I referred to my ability. :)

You're right, they can hold their own. I do win about as often as I lose with them, with mostly ties. But it's never easy.

I think you guys should check out http://PaulQuigleyFanClub.com

Membership is only 9.99$ and from what I hear he spends all the proceeds on brown paint for his Tau, as well as cocaine and hookers.
