Online retailer Amazon has announced that it is to introduce a free delivery service for customers in Ireland.

The service is eligible for goods on all orders costing £25 (€27) or more.
The move comes just months after the company lifted most of the delivery restricutions it had applied to shoppers in Ireland.

Previously, customers in Ireland could only purchase items from the books, music, DVD and video, software and videogames and toys stores.
The company had stopped delivering electrical products to Ireland in 2006 after a row over the implementation of the waste directive. However In April, the company began shipping electronics and other previously unavailable goods.

In a statement, Amazon, the world's biggest online retailer, said that since it had increased the number of goods available to buy in Ireland, it had seen a "very positive" response from Irish customers.

"Having made millions of items available at low prices, the aim now is to enhance the shopping experience of customers in Ireland and we are delighted to introduce a free delivery service, allowing even greater value to be gained from shopping at Amazon.co.uk," said Brian McBride, managing director of Amazon.co.uk.

Bestsellers in Ireland since the extended product range became available include Braun epilators, Garmin Forerunner sports watches, ghd hair straighteners, Nikon digital SLR Cameras and Western Digital external hard drives.

In addition to the new delivery service Amazon has also introduced a currency converter on its site which displays pricing in euros so that customers know exactly what they are paying when ordering goods.

well, i dunno about that. i tried ordering a digital coaxial cable last week and it wouldn't ship to ireland. a lot of products on amazon.co.uk are from third party sellers/businesses, and i think it's those third parties who still refuse to ship electrical goods here.

Good news by all accounts- thanks for posting. Just a question, in recent times I purchased some CDs from amazon and ended up having to pay govt duty i.e. parcel withheld/retained at sorting office.
While I've no problem in paying the duty (although its a major hastle having to go to the depot), I can never figure out what I will have to pay and on what type of items i.e. Books Vs CDs Vs electrical equipment

Any help on the above greatly appreciated.

There is no duty on products shipped from within the EU, as far as I understand.

EDIT: Confrimed. Revenue's guide to recieving goods through the post is here.

Or a 3rd party seller on Amazon who may be shipping from outside the EU ( this includes the channel islands )

while I thank you for posting this document, I am actually more confused now, especially considering the following quotes:

    Consignments of Negligible Value (€22)
Consignments not exceeding a total value of €150 may be imported without payment of Customs Duty, while consignments not exceeding a total value of €22 may be imported without payment of VAT.

there is plenty of info there on the concept of appeals, which leads me to believe that this whole import duty/tax/vat thing, is not an exact science.

Now if they'd only accept laser I'd be a very happy man indeed.

I've found this to be great, my Amazon purchases have increased significantly over the past few weeks as a result.

As pointed out above if the order originates within the EU there'll be no duty applied. Amazon adjusts the VAT rate to the Irish one.

For books, the Book Depository is always cheaper, but they have two sites you should check before ordering, the .co.uk, and the .com. Often the .com site is cheaper. Delivery times are almost identical, so I'm guessing that even when you order from the .com site, they still ship from the UK.

So what's the deal with the pricing here? Everything seems to get marked up when you get to the check out.

It's the Irish VAT rate being applied. When browsing the site all prices are shown including UK Vat (15% atm). When you checkout and it's being sent to Ireland, the UK Vat is replaced by the Irish VAT.

Does anyone know what the delivery restrictions to Ireland are?

    According to http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200355380#a

"certain electrical items" may not qualify, how do we know which items do or don't? Is it based on weight, or size?

The "Super Saver Delivery" items I see have "Delivered FREE in the UK with Super Saver Delivery" next to the price.

Should the qualifying items have "Delivered FREE in the UK & ROI" instead?

    Appreciate your response.

    Tin.
