Drinking.......from boredom

Not for one second do I believe I'm in anyway addicted to drinking.
I once went three months without a single drink though that was in the last 10 or so years.

Go for a few social drinks on a Friday but that's about it. Until last year Ryan Tubridy on RTÉ was my Saturday night in.

I do have a stressful job, don't hate me for having a job :)
Long hours, understaffed, under pressure and team leaders who take their stress out shouting at minions like me.

Live alone, 1 bed apartment, earn decent money so can afford it. I shared in college and for years when I started working. I wanted a go at living alone, meh it's alright.
Go home from work, no interest in TV and realy I could spend a few hours on boards or a few other sites doing not much in particular. It's not that interesting

So I'd drink a bottle or two of wine maybe 4 nights a weeks plus drinks on Friday and a few cans on Saturday.
It's not addication, it's going home on my own at night, pissed off from work and to stare at the four walls in the apartment. It'd drive you to drink!

Many nights I fall asleep in my clothes, wake up at 4am, back to bed but I can bounce out of bed at 7am and into work for another hectic day

So drinking out of boredom, I'm not alone on boards but how to sort it?

Well the obvious answer is, if you're drinking out of boredom then you need to remove boredom from the equation.

Find a way to fill your evenings. Join a club. Get a hobby. Go on dates. Do voluntary work. Learn a skill. Do an evening course at a local tech or uni. Do a sport or join the gymn, there's never a downside to keeping yourself healthy and fit as opposed to drinking most evenings.

Move out of your flat and back into shared accommodation? Sounds like you may have preferred it. I won't live alone entirely since I know it will play into my most hermetic instincts (though instead of drinking I'd likely just play video games non-stop. Almost as bad.).

I'm in the exact same situation. Some of my friends have even asked me if I am an alcoholic but the truth is I drink out of boredom much like you!

    Very convincing opening line
    /sarcasm

Seriously, there are many types of drinking problems - using booze to fill holes in your day could easily point to one. I had some issues last summer and drank very heavily - now I'm a four can a week man, but i know i definitely have drink issues.

Don't underestimate how easy it is to depend on booze.

    how to sort it?

    Stop.

    After all,
Not for one second do I believe I'm in anyway addicted to drinking.

So it should be easy for you.

In fact you make it sound SO easy Im not even sure why this is even a problem for you.
It's not addication, it's going home on my own at night, pissed off from work and to stare at the four walls in the apartment. It'd drive you to drink!

Mmm...Maybe to boards. Or the pub. The club. Or a movie. The Discovery Channel, surf a little internet Porn. Sometimes even a drive down the 526 or that time I went fishing. But not ever to a bottle of wine I must say.

Believe me I can be bored out of my mind sometimes but I definitely peg alcohol down below the top 20 of things to occupy my time with. Dont get me wrong its fun when youre a child/young adult and you get to go out and get ****faced but you realize theres as much fun if not more to be had out in the nitelife when you arent slurring over your own words and tripping over your own feet.

OP, I think you need to reassess you drinking habits, you clam that you don't have a problem, but clearly you do

lets do that maths shall we,

On a weekly basis you drink:

1-2 bottle of wine 4 days a week, so lets assume you drink two for two nights and one for 2 nights = 6 bottles.

Average units per bottle is about 9, so that's:
    9 * 6 = 54

Lets assume you would drink 6 drinks on Friday and 6 cans on Saturday

    that's another 24

    24 + 54 = 78

The medically recommended units of alcohol per week for a male is 21, so you drink three times that much on a regular basis.

In your post, you talk very blase about drinking, making some comment about your only vitory over alcohol being a 3 month stint where you didn't drink about 10 years ago.

I would say you don't drink out of boredom, you suffer from boredom because you drink too much.

Perhaps you should consider quitting now before its too late, Most alcoholics don't realize they have a problem until is way to late to do anything about it.

If you take offense to this post and feel you don't have a problem, consider that fact that you are posting looking for help, this is the advice you need to hear, weather you take it or not.

Stop drinking now, or at the very least cut it down to below 21 units a week, and by the way, that's the most you should drink, not a target
