Could be running low on memory or you have a lot of background programs running as services.

    Needs a bit more information
    1. What OS is it
    2. How much RAM do you have
    3. How much free disk space do you have

There's various programs that can access the disk excessively.
I think Windows has a disk indexer that tries keeping a catalog of your files up-to-date. You might have a virus scanner scanning your entire pc.

    Not enough info to tell.

how loud is the clickinng. I ask this because harddrive noise is relatively silent, well in my book and also because a clicking noise is the sign of a harddrive on the way out.

I was thinking it might be because there isnt enough ram......but why would this cause the hard drive to keep running??
