Leaving job, can I claim the dole?

I've heard conflicting reports on this, If I leave my job will I be denied JSA?

I've never been on the dole before and have been working for years. Unfortunately, I have made the decision to leave my job as it has become too much, so much so, I broke down today and the doctor had to prescribe me zanax just so I can get through my work day.

A definitive answer would be great if anyone has it?

If you leave with out cause, they can deny you benefit for 9 weeks, but if you need zanax from the doctor to get thought the day, you might be able to make a case that you had good reason to leave.

If you are denied the dole, which is likely, you can probably claim disability.

You should also be able to claim from the health board in the interim.

No one here will be able to give you a "definate answer", you'll have to go into your local S.W office and see...

In the abscense of a definitive answer, I would like to hear if anyone has personal experience.

I wouldn't feel right claiming disability as I am not disabled, I just genuinely fear for my mental state and health as I'm under so much stress that I have to take zanax to get through the day. No job is worth this.

You're right, no job is worth that.

I think a letter from your doctor saying that you have been put on xanax due to the incredibly stressful nature of your job and that your mental health would be better served by no longer working there would be a good thing to have when you go into the social welfare office.

I don't see them disqualifying you from the dole, tbh. I can't say for sure, of course, but you have a good reason for leaving. You're not just quitting for the hell of it.

If you worked 'for years' then it would be JB. Would need to write out a decent reason for quitting the job. They can disqualify you for 0 to 9 weeks.

Claim disability, its not a false claim if your on medication because of stress from the job. Failing that you could always get yourself fired. A job is a means to an end, nothing more. If you cant stand the job get out of there and find another one.

No job is worth your mental health.
Not everyone can cope with deadlines and stress, sure if we could we'd all be Wall Street traders. And that's why they earn big money.

The OP has a medical reason for leaving. The social welfare officer will assess this. If they don't get Job seekers then they apply for disability.

You won't get Job seekers if you get fired through misconduct. At least, you'll have to wait the nine weeks

If the OP cannot handle the job then best to get a doctors cert and hand in their notice. But be certain before doing this!

You may be disqualified from getting Jobseeker's Benefit for 9 weeks if you left work voluntarily and without a reasonable cause.

Your employment situation sounds oppressive, have you discussed the situation with your employer? Does your company have a grievence procedure? Is the cause of the stress the actual work or the culture of the workplace or is it the behaviour of an individual. I would strongly recommend that you do not resign until you have brought the situation to the attention of your employer and given him/her an opportunity to improve conditions to enable you to continue in employment. An employer has a duty of care to his/her employees and once made aware that an employee is suffering the level of stress you describe is obliged to take action. However, an employer can only take action if he/she had been informed that the situation exists. If, when notified, they fail to take action, you may then resign and take a case of constructive dismissal against your employer.
