    Hi, Im new to this site and posted this on the wrong board until I found the right one.

    Im wondering has anyone any advice. Been seeing a counsellor for over a year and a half and dont know when to stop. I feel Ive come to rely on going and yet I fight against it as I never thought I would be going to counselling for so long. When Ive brought it up about finishing I dont get any guidance or answer and then I dont push it and figure, ok if she is not saying I should finish then its fine for me to keep going. My counsellor is quite good, caring and compassionate. I guess Im not very good about being open enough. Am i just ignoring my instiincts about finsihing or just scared about making a break. Cannot believe I am in this situation.Any views are appreciated.

    There's nothing wrong with going to a counselor for that long if it's still useful to you.

    You have to ask why you started going in the first place, and if those issues are resolved. If you feel you haven't been 'open enough' with your counselor, than they may not have been.

    Also, if you decide you don't need it any more, and issues arise again, you can, of course, always go back to counseling.

    A lot of counsellors won't give you definite advice about anything, on purpose. If it's become an issue for you, I'd suggest saying to her something like "I've brought up about finishing our sessions together a few times, but I'm not entirely certain about it. I have some worries about this, including that I've become too dependent on our sessions. Can we explore this today?"

    If she doesn't follow that up ... find a new counsellor, frankly.
