What happens to weapons that the defence forces or gardaí no longer require? Are they kept as reserves, scrapped or sold on?Which leads me to another question what is the states position on selling weapons,is it legal?

Well, all the old Lee Enfield Mk. IV rifle's were sold to Canada or America IIRC. A load of them were reportedly brand new never been used.

Most are destroyed AFAIK though, unless they are collectors items.

the vast majority of the fn fals that the p.d.f and r.d.f no longer used are stored in the curragh as part of the national reserve

I heard a rumour that the army dumped a rake of weapons, I think 303s, into the ocean a few years back because they had no use for them.

Seems that quite a lot of "weapons" are sawed up into 3 pieces etc. and then disposed of..... some buried in or around The Curragh Command.
