Is it worth upgrading to the version 4 books. I currently have the 3.5 edition books and I'm wondering is there much of a difference.

There's a very big difference, the two systems are entirely incompatible. I've heard both good and bad things about 4th ed, but I haven't played it myself. I recomend the Pathfinder RPG published by paizo, you can get a pdf of the rulebook for about €7 on their website. It's designed to be backwards compatible with all the 3.5 material, but much more streamlined.
