I mentioned in another thread that I was going to attempt to put a MAK supergun into an old Megadrive case.

Well, managed to make a start on it today!

Some of the shell had to be hacked a bit. And the cartridge flaps had to be removed (The plastic that creates the springing action on them took up way too much of the limited vertical space) But apart from that everything else is more or less untouched.

After tinkering about with it for a while and trying to figure out where the supergun would go I came across a nice suprise - The JAMMA connector almost fit perfectly into the Megadrive expansion port slot without any modification! In fact it was only 1cm off. After a bit of fidgiting with a dremmel it fit perfectly.

I did make one idiotic mistake - The first time I assembled the whole thing again, I'd made the JAMMA connector flush with the side of the Megadrive. It actually looked really well..was pleased. Until I tried to actually plug a JAMMA device into it! Stupid stupid Oisin. Disassembled the whole thing again and made the blue part stick out from the Megadrive. Now it works.

The one thing that caused an issue was getting the scart and ATX power connections into the supergun within the limited space. Managed it in the end though. Involved taking the plastic casing off the scart connection.

    Things left to do -

At the moment the joystick, headphones, power cable and scart cable are just going into holes in the shell and linking up to their ports on the supergun. It works but looks ugly. Plus you can't disconnect anything. Pain when moving it about.

I've ordered a small av jack extension cable which will put a nice audio jack on the front of the Megadrive.

I've also ordered an ATX extension cable which will be mounted to the Megadrive case. Considered putting a smaller PSU in the case but the space is extremely limited as is.

Still trying to work out how to get the controller ports to link up/mount a scart connection to the case.

Lastly, LEDs! :D ..and get the damn cartridge flaps back on.

Anyway, on to the pics -

Something about it seems a bit durty...

Also been trying to come up with a name for the thing-

    Mega Super Gun
    Super Mega Gun
    Sega Mega Gun
    Sega Super Gun
    Super Mega Drive
    Super Gun Drive

    Sega Mega Super Drive
    Mega Super Drive
    Mega Drive Gun
    Mega Gun Drive
    Mega Super Gun Drive
    Mega Gun Super Drive

Kinda like Mega Gun Super Drive.

I really need to get out more...:pac:

It's the last picture, the way the two machines are connected, docked, together...one. It arouses me greatly.

Right, have decided to take this project to the next level :)

Here's a photo of the current innards -

    DSC_0283.jpg

Next week hopefully the plan will go as follows -

Get the supergun bolted to the MD shell
Female scart port on the Megadrive shell
Female 3.5mm jack on the Megadrive shell
Megadrive controller ports extended to shell (via some DB9 extensions)

Something I need help with from some tech savvy posters! Have decided it does indeed need a PSU in it and not external. As it could mean some super 1337 LEDs. Plus there's ****e loads of horizontal room as you can see.

The hardest dimension to get a psu to fit is the MD vertical. Its max vertical height is 5cm. (The dome part). Therefore I am trying to get an ATX psu under 4cm!

The only one I can find is this -

    http://www.power-on.com/flexatx.html

It's the perfect size, but way too expensive. The whole point of this really was to make it out of scrap parts. Which has been going well so far.

So if anyone knows where I may get one of them cheap, or something similar cheap, I'd love to hear it!

A tiny, cheap ATX power supply ... I'd say they are scarcer than hobby horse droppings.

You could look at something like this ... or maybe this ... but it won't be self contained ... and that kinda defeats the purpose.

I'm looking for a small PSU, to replace one in my old powermac ... I'll keep an eye out.

Could you crack open an existing PSU..and rearrange its guts to suit?

I wouldn't recommend opening a PSU, thats where fires start you know!

But it looks fantastic, well done that boy!

Next it'll be a Megadrive into a Jamma cab, not quite as tight a squeeze!

Not really ... the dimensions of the PSU will normally be determined by the height of the cooling fins around the switching components, which determine the height of the fan.

That's not to say you couldn't rearrange the guts of a PSU ... but you'd really have to know what you were doing, in terms of heat dissipation.

I wouldn't recommend it ... much better to buy a purpose built PSU of the correct size.

    Cheers guys!

So it looks like I'll be splashing out a bit whatever way I go with this....for the moment I'll use the ATX extension cable to give it a lead out on the case. Wanted to get it finished this week but I guess I can wait a little longer.

I gots one of those!. Didn't build it myself though...don't nearly have 1337 eough skills yet! :D

Next is going to be a netbook in a Megadrive mk1 I think. I was considering doing something silly like mounting an LCD into a cartridge and have it slotted into the console.

With the shells of these Megadrives being put to use, why not do something interesting with the innards?
Maybe build them into a portable TV or DVD player?
Perhaps you could mount it in a car, or bolt it to the back of a 19"LCD TV?

You could, of course put the Jamma connector under the back of the Megadrive pointing forwards, so the console "rests" on it, build the connector into a MegaCD Mk1 casing?

That'd be excellent alright. Although I'm only using broken consoles. I'm not into sacrificing working hardware for projects. Plus broken ones are cheaper to pick up anyway :pac:

If you're going to put Megadrive innards into things you'd be better off using one of those mini clone models with a cart slot. Some of them are tiny. Plus you wouldn't feel as guilty! Heh

    Interesting..! Got a broken MegaCD?!

\Edit - Success on the PSU front! only 17 euro too -

What I'm either going to do now is connect it up to a 12v power supply inside the case (I think I have a few small ones knocking about that could fit) or else put a connection on the case to plug a 12v power supply into.

/Off to buy a horrendously tacky LED kit :pac:

    RUNNING LIGHTS WITHOUT OVERBYTES.

    :D I love it!

This may turn out like a skang mobile if I'm not careful.

How about a scrolling dot matrix???

Could have a nice big blue SEGA logo.

Spent a while working on this today with a mate of mine. He bolted the Supergun to the Megadrive shell/cut and AV slot/shaped the inside while I spent the same time wiring DB9 ports together.

    It went like this -

Oisin solders two ports together. 18 connections in total.

/Plugs it in and it doesn't work.

    :(

/Spends ages trying to separate the wires to make sure they're not touching.

/Plugs it in again, doesn't work.

/Looks up DB9 port pin out Diagram.

Turns out I'd connected up the male port backwards. Idiot!

Desolder all of the male port pins and resolder them the proper way.

    And it works, hurrah!

Then my friend pointed out that the Megadrive DB9 ports would look nicer on the front of the console.

So he hacks them off the motherboard while I yet again desolder 9 DB9 pins.

Solder the Megadrive DB9 port on. (Took bloody ages, they weren't made for attaching wires)

then something dawned on me. I now had a male to male connection! Stupidly, I'd removed the female DB9 port instead of the male one!

The concept of desoldering another DB9 port and resoldering it after already working on 45 pins in total made me want to fling the lot out the window (And myself).

    ...

Nice to know anyway that the controller port extension idea worked perfectly!

Don't open your PSU unless you really know what you are doing, like trained electrician level of knowing what you are doing. PSUs store up charge inside them you can do some serious damage to yourself by messing around inside one.
