    Hi,

My tax is out by a few months and the cops have given me a week to get it up to date or they sieze it.

Anyway, I am buying a new car and wish to trade my car in with no tax.

Can I still be liable to pay the tax and arrears even though I wount own the car after the trade in?

Can I get a fine or something?

    Thanks MS

If the Gardai know that you have no tax on the car for the last while, I'd imagine that they will still chase you for it. If you've been warned to tax it, and produce in a week, it will eventually lead to a summons I'd say.

yep, you will be liable for the back tax for the dates you owned the car + if your already in the guards system if they stop you again with no tax you can say bye bye to the car dosent matter if your only driving it to the garage to trade it in

If you sell it it won't be up to date and you'll have to appear in court. Pay the back tax and at least another two months of it.

I'd imagine you would at the very least get stung for the arears from the previous car when you go to tax the new car.

You're liable for the tax for all the months you used the car on the road, plus any penalties.

The Garda won't care if you're trading in or if you take the car off the road from now on.

I was trading in my car and decided not to renew my car tax. Anyway, the trade-in got held up and next thing I went over a month out of date on my tax. Coming up to the B/H weekend I decided I'd better get taxed. When I went online I realised I couldn't just pay for the 3 months since last taxed. I had to pay a month's arrears and then the NEXT 3 months.

So instead of a saving of 170 Euro I got stung for 240. Was I sick!?!

    We live and learn ....
