whenever i put a game in my ps3 it doesnt show it as being there on the xmb menu,
and if it does find it it says 'an error occured during the start operation and shows the number 80010514'

ive tried other games and they dont work but it plays dvd's
ive restored it to the factory settings and wiped the hard drive, and ive updated the firmware but its not working

what should i do can it be fixed?
would sony replace it for me?

After a quick google I found this,

    http://www.ps3blog.co.za/2008/04/10/ps3-error-80010514-explained/
The error code is actually one of two things, a) a faulty sector on the internal hard drive, or b) a faulty installation of software/firmware, both iterations actually coincide with eachother. If the hard drive suffers a faulty sector ( a section of damaged space on the drive that data may have been written to that no longer is readable), an installation may still be processed, and even work, but the error can cause some serious side effects, such as option b. If your PS3 has installed an item incorrectly, including firmware, it is in high risk of receiving this error.

I've the exact same problem as you, happened a few days ago, I think it was the latest firmware update that came with FIFA 10. Did you install the firmware with FIFA 10 bought in Tesco for 30squid by any chance? it would narrow it down to a faulty batch if so.

My ps3 is 1yr and 10 months old so i dunno how it fairs out warranty wise, It was a xmas present and I def hav no receipt for it. Im not payin €160 for a refurbished model, this is sony's fault and it should not break after such a short period of time, I wouldn mind but its only used at weekends to play pro ev and FIFA. Its not on.

mine is 3 years old this christmas

i got it when i was playing cod4

    this is what sony said

    Hi,

Thank you for your mail. I am sorry to hear that the troubleshooting did not resolve the issue for your particular case.

As advised in the previous email, If your console is still not responding, please return to your retailer with your original receipt for the appropriate exchange for your current warranty status.

If your console is over 12 months old, you do not hold original receipt or is physically damaged the console is considered out of warranty and a fee of approximately €160 would apply (€131 + VAT). Out of warranty exchanges can be obtained at most retailers. This is the fastest way for yourself.

    If you have any problems at the retailer, please let us know and reply with the following details;

    Full Name
Address for replacement (preferably business address. Someone will need to be present at the address from Monday- Friday to sign for replacement)
    Contact Number
Console model Type (starting with CEC)
Do you hold receipt and if so what is the date on this? Receipt is required to prove warranty status
    Retailer and Branch?

    Kindest Regards,
