Anyone know if there are any cars made in the USA specifically for the Irish market with right hand drive and Km odometers?

    Thanks!

    ah great point.

So what cars are made in the USA for Japanese market.

    BWM X5 is a good option - (thanks Robbie99)

Looking for family car to buy in USA and bring back to Ireland.

I guess Jeep is another option? Want to make sure that that specific model is already sold in Ireland so i can get it serviced and repaired easily.

I'd be surprised if a US-built car made for the Japanese market could actually be registered new in the US?

does it have to be? I would just keep in storage unused for 6 months and then ship with my other possessions.

We can buy RHD cars from VW/Audi dealers in Germany so why not in the US?

If you can get it EX VAT, pay for shipping, pay Irish VAT and then pay Irish VRT you would save lots of money and have a good spec.

Was thinking about that too but just seems so counter intuitive shipping a new car from Europe and then shipping back again. Buying locally in USA seems like it would save those shipping costs.

other problem is that I do not like USA cars!!

Things would be alot more complicated dealing between US & ireland compared to EU country & ireland.
The yanks have strict rules re registration so a Euro spec car would be allowed.
Buying ex VAT also only applied to other EU states I think.

Best thing would be to find out if it is possible to register an EU spec car in the states. If so, go ahead and do it. I dont think the idea of looking for something built in states is relavent as all the manufcturers are competing on price so some of the german marques are shipping into the us at very slim margins to be competitive.

I looked at the price list for a 320d from germany and then added vat vrt customs and shipping and it cost more than the new BMW price list. I may have got it wrong but tried it after looking at an old 5th gear episode were they bought cars from belgium. Have I made a mistake in calculating this?

Plus pay import duty over the original purchase price plus the cost of shipping.

    short answer is no:

another short answer is, only one I can think of: Subaru - the USPO uses some, so they're available in RHD. LHD lights, mph clocks and US smog gear, mind..........so don't ask for parts around here.......

mind you, I'd buy a Mustang, Camaro or Charger, and bring it back on a change of ownership. Be prepared for 2k p.a. tax, though......

...which your scooby might attract too, as it certainly won't be diesel !

If bringing stuff from the US stacked up, I'd bring in a 911 - only USD$68k over there

Actually, OP, that's what you should do: buy a 911. Europe is full of 'ordinary' cars as-is........why not bring home something 'nice' instead.......?

ML merc's and R-Class also built in US, btw........

What about a 300C (diesel), the estate version looks great.

I spotted a few tour buses in San Francisco that were RHD, so you could register an RHD vehicle it in the US & drive it. All postal vehicles are RHD.
Here is a government link on it:

http://www.dot.gov.nt.ca/_live/pages/wpPages/Registration_of_Right-Hand-Drive_Vehicles.aspx (damn, this is a Canada link)

Another US based discussion on it:

Companies over there specialising in RHD:

Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth are available in Ireland with RHD. If you order one from the factory in the US with RHD as and option you could probably get one after a wait.
I have recently seen a late model Ford Mustang with RHD in Ireland.

Would still have to pay VRT and VAT and duty if registered but not used! (Proof of mileage increase, insurance, etc.) Just get a few motorcycles instead (but for Gawd's sake don't buy a Hardly Davidson!)

Honda and probably some other Japanese manufacturers produce RHD versions in the USA for export to Europe/Aus/NZ. For example, Honda Accord Coupé. That was then, not sure about now.

Aren't a lot of the American cars sold here built in Europe anyway? Austria I think. Also, the RHD Mustang is a car that has been converted from LHD.

That might be an option OP, getting it converted. Personally I think you're mad to even consider it as the car may need some costly modifications to be road legal here

    Because this is Europe...
The German dealers didnt want to deal with RHD orders in LHD markets till forced to do so.

AFAIK, all Chryslers for the european market are actually made in Austria by Steyr.
