I've been looing at a nice Dell Studio latptop with a 17" HD screen for 599. Seems like a very good deal for HD but but Windows 7 isn't availible and they don't know when it will be. Seems like a deal breaker for another wise good buy?

I dont predict that changing soon. For the same reason Im hearing rumours circling about Intel pushing back USB 3.0 until 2011: Theres too much stock. Everybody wants to burn their old inventory, and that includes Vista and USB 2.0s and whatnots.

If youre in the market for a laptop pay the stupid shipping and handling charge for an upgrade disc, or wait 6 months. whatever.

Are they likely to give a free upgrade down the line?

The Studio 1747 (new model) is due out in a few days/weeks. Its on the UK page already if you want to check it out. That'll come with Win7 pre-installed.

Most likely they'll just discontinue the old one as soon as stocks are used up, so I don't think they'll bother offering a model pre-loaded with Win7 in the meantime.

Are you sure the Studio 1747 isn't just the Core i7, DDR3 model?I doubt they'd discontinue the older version as it's a more budget model,If that's the case..

The new Studio 1747 model is only 30 euros more according to Dell UK/France/Germany and has an LED screen with subwoofer; amongst other features as standard.

    It's worth waiting for, imo.

    Yeah its a new model.

Cosmetically a bit different (nicer imo), LED backlit screens as standard, has a new sound system, ATI 4xxx graphics options, PM55 chipset, support for the newer i7 processors (but cheaper Dual Core are available), e-SATA port, Displayport, yadda yadda.

Definitely a new model to replace the old one. Will be available with cheap processor options and also the higher-end i7s, and eventually the i5 mobiles.

Any idea on a release date in Ireland, Voodu?

EDIT: Add to that - whenever they're out. Are the i7s cooler to run than the Core2Duos? I don't need anymore power than what's in my current Core2Duo but I wouldn't mind if it ran cooler.

Shouldn't be long now. Seems like we are always left behind when other countries have the new models.

The mobile i7 processors definitely don't run cooler than any previous Core2Duo flat out. I mean, they are quadcore processors, and have 45W and 55W TDP. If you don't care about power or getting things done quickly, there is really no point in getting one - save your money.
