I've been told there's a 9 week wait period after you quit your job for the dole. Does this mean you quit, go to the office and sign-on and then they wait 9 weeks (not taking in account processing time) to get a check? Or are you supposed to wait 9 weeks after quitting before you even go to the office?

go in the first day you are unemployed.

since you are leaving your job voluntarily, sw can choose to disqualify you from payment for up to 9 weeks, but they may not disqualify you at all (depending on your reasons for leaving) and they may not disqualify you for the full 9 weeks.

Thanks. Basically my plan was to quit my job and head elsewhere (I'm thinking Germany) to find another job. The dole is my back up plan if I fail to get work and run out of money (I have enough savings for a month or two).

So I'd quit my job and go to the dole office and apply. It'll probably take at least 2 months to process me anyway. I'll head to Germany and hopefully get a job - in which case I'll contact the dole office and tell them to cancel my application. If I can't find anything, I'll come back and get the dole while I look for work again here.

This seems legitimate to me (I'll be looking for work, just not here). Do you think the social welfare office would frown upon it?
