Not sure how good these units are, but the XPS brand seems solid enough and 50% off is pretty good for consumer range. I work for Dell but not in the consumer market - this offer was emailed internally and is available to the public.

    http://ireland.dell.com/ie/en/home/Desktops/desktop-xps-a2420/pd.aspx?refid=desktop-xps-a2420&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1&~ck=mn

Its worth comparing it to outlet/ebay prices also - but this is a two day online offer

Hope it's of some use to someone. Mods: If this is not a bargain feel free to delete. I'm not touting for business either - I want redundancy!

Looks nice. anyone out there have this and found it good, bad or indifferent ? my dad needs a pc upgrade and my mother hates cables around the place so this might solve that problem.

    That's some offer.

    Can they be upgraded?

it's an ok offer, but these were ridiculously priced to begin with so the new price is only ok. It's not a stunning bargain, the spec is poor on the cheaper one and the dearer one is still overpriced. It's a nice design but you are really paying for it..

    Doesn't appear so!

I like these, nice design, good offer but I have heard some mixed reviews about them, I have a Dell XPS for the past 2 years and the amount of trouble that I have with it is astounding thats not to say this systems is a bad build.

Halving the price of these things makes them reasonable, but not a bargain (only the first one)

Its shocking how many people buy XPS's, they are all shockingly overpriced to start with and then give endless troubles once you buy one.

Had an online chat with dell and I asked could they add some memory for me. They said NO. I asked could I buy the memory from them and put it in myself, they said NO.So the memory cannot be upgraded.
I agree that they are overpriced. They did the same as this last year (maybe not the XPS model) and I kicked myself afterwards as not only did the discount disappear, Dell put there prices up at the begining of this year.

    IMHO
    Minus side
    - Nearly an extra €350 (including discount)for the other model Way too much. The main differences being, better processor, bigger hard drive & a built in blu ray player
    - Only 2 gig RAM
    - The memory cannot be upgraded, though you probably can try !!

    Plus side
    - better than this 6 year old PC that I am typing this on, it is nearly as slow as myself
    - 24" HDTV
    - Internal 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless network card included
    - card slot reader
    - Integrated HDTV tuner
    - HDMI slot at the rear
    - Free upgrade to Windows 7
    - Bluetooth also - not 100% sure
    - Wireless keyboard and mouse

Just bought the lower grade model. got an extra 5% off.
For the €350 difference I could buy a Playstation with A blu ray player.

On the hotdeals forums seems as though it maybe limited to just 420 throughout Europe.

Do you have a code for the 5% ?

With the Windows 7 on the hotdeals link you gave one guy says yes it is eligible and is then corrected. Did you confirm with dell ?

    Thanks for the info...
Dell's upgrade program does state that the XPS One 24 is eligible for the Windows 7 upgrade but I would recommend that anyone purchasing this should contact dell to confirm !

After reading further it seems like only an XPS One 24 model with Vista Ultimate is eligible for the Win 7 upgrade - bloody shame !

But I would still call dell to confirm !

Dell sales chat said windows 7 doesn't come installed but you can get the free upgrade after purchase. I guess these units were manufactured and boxed ages ago hence they don't have 7 installed.

I bought one of these last year for half price plus an extra 10% off (thanks to Boards). Came to just over €500 for 20 inch model which PC World were flogging as a special offer at €1,300. Great deal, good machine.

The only difference with this offer is that the processor has been upped. Otherwise the specs are the same. Looks like a lame offer.

    lies.

    2596054967_6c77171c37.jpg?v=0

The Dell XPS One 24 uses the following
    * Module Size: 2GB
    * Package: 240-pin DIMM
    * Feature: DDR2 PC2-6400
    # Chipset: Intel G45
    # Maximum Memory: 4096MB
    # USB Support: 2.x Compliant
    # Standard Memory: 4096MB removable
    # Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1)

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 2GB per slot.*

Taking the back off is only two screws... really easy.

Just make sure to get DDR2 800 ram that is rated for 1.8v and runs 5-5-5-15. There are a lot of kits that are rated for higher voltage, and the motherboard probably will not be able to supply the correct voltage to run them.

    Thanks for the update royalmarinecomm.

Is this the memory that is required.
    http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ie&l=en&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1&sku=A2336155
So I could possibly double the RAM for an extra €114
Do both slots have to have identical memory size or can one be 2gb and the other 1gb

"Up to 1GB may not be available with 32-bit operating systems due to system resource requirements." So if I upgrade to 4GB, will the other 3GB be available

yes you can use 1gb stick and a 2gb stick at the same time.
with a 32bit OS, you will only have 3.7gb of ram visible, however, lots of people say its worth putting in the 4gb as the system tends to use it.

dont waste ur time getting 3gb. get the 4gb its well worth it.
