hi folks. Need a little help if possible. After years with a compact im taking the plunge into the dslr range. Im off to london next weekend and am purchasing either of these 2 cameras over.(muc cheaper as far as i can tell).

Basically im not sure what to go for.

I can get the 1000d with a twin lens bundle ( Canon EF-S 18-55mm zoom lens and Canon EF 75-300mm zoom lens) for 489 sterling or i can get the 450d as stands for 499 sterling.

Camera will generally be used for travel and general photos.

    What should i get!!!!!!!

    thanks

    hi mickey
well I have the 1000d and find it excellent, at the time I couldnt afford the 450d but I know a few people with 450s and to be honest there is very little between them if i had the cash i'd go with the 450 but to be honest picture quality is equal on both the 450 has a couple of extra bells and whistles

I got mine at gatwick airport... !!! dont know if the value is still there though i noticed a few hikes in prices last few times i flew...

Would advise going for the 450D as there's so much extra functionality (especially the extra auto-focus points) for such a small gap in price. 450D prices are dropping at the moment since the 500D has been released (sod all extra functionality over the 450 barring video).

Would also advise purchasing on-line over buying in the UK. You'll get a better price and let's face it the only advantage of buying in a bricks and mortar store (after sales service and support) is lost if you buy in the UK.

Should point out that I'm a very happy 450 owner before I'm accused of bias... ;)

dpreview suggests the following differences in technical specs'

megapixels 10 v 12 (450d) on same sensor size which actually leaves less pixel density on 1000d
7 point autofocus (1000d) compared to 9 point autofocus (450d)
ever so slightly faster continuous shooting on the 450d (3.5/sec v 3/sec on 1000d)
3" display on 450d compared to 2.5" on the 1000d
    450d is 22g heavier

If you get 'into' photography in a big way - you will probably change your camera body after a couple of years so its not really a life purchase, the system on the other hand is generally a life choice (well in terms of how it usually plays out for people).

    450D is your choice.

thanks for the replies folks. i was leaning towards the 450d alright but it was the fact of the extra lens was putting doubt in my head. Not too worried about warranty as sister lives in london and im over every couple of months. if somethin went wrong id send it to her to sort out for me.

hi folks. change of plan re: camera. since my last post both canon and nikon have announced gbp£50 CASH BACK offers on the d5000 and 500d.

So this weekend in london in can get d5000 for £479 or 500d for £529 including cashback. for these prices i have to go with one of these, can someone help me with advice. i have no long standing history of favouritism with either
