Check the oil level. Engine wear will cause oil to be burned.

Usually age related, what type of car and age is it.

    Valve stem oil seals maybe?

I had the same on a Citroen (lots of smoke after idling) and it was the valve stem oil seals

it usually smokes more when hot and then at long red lights itl smoke up the guy behind me. usually the more it sits on, the more thick nasty smelling smoke itl make.
was told it could be head gasket but compression is ok, not overheating or anything, but theres oil loss quite a bit but that could also be slightly due to a faulty oil cap which ive yet to replace.. think a bits comin out there too. not the best car as you can imagine..

got it serviced bout a month ago and oil has been passing thru it since anyway
