Ipod software update

I’m currently running software ver2.2 on my ipod touch. Up until now it didn’t bother me that I was up to date, as I’m travelling and don’t get the chance to use most of the new features. However, most, if not all, the new apps require later versions to run. And lately, there are a few that I really want (Autodesk apps for a start). So I’ve decided to give in and update. I have access to iTunes in work, but it’s not my main library. I use it to manually update songs to the ipod so I still keep my old files, but can I do this with software. If I download software will it require a full sync?
Are there other ways to update without a full sync?

    Thanks

But did you use a different computer for a set of original songs and the update?
Just want to be sure, as its be months before I can get it back

I did actually, synced a loada songs of my uncles comp amd then got the software update on my own laptop.. i synced about 200 songs off my uncles comp, not the whole library, and it was done manually so i dont think u should have any problems. Sure when you get a normal update, the music on the ipod is never affected

You miss the point, I am trying to update the software from a different computer.
You used your own laptop. I'm not worred about the manual stuff, its my original library I'm worried, as a full sync with a different computer would wipe it.

A note on the update screen mentions you main computer or similar

if you do a back-up it doesn't matter from what computer you do the upgrade or jailbreak. after you update you simply connect it to your computer and restore your back-up. all the data will come back, if it's still on your computer/itunes.

for example. i did a jailbreak on my colleagues iphone, on my computer. the phone was completely wiped. after that i went to his computer and restore it from his back-up and all the data came back. i repeat. all the music and the playlists created have to be in the same location as they wore before the back-up.

When I said travalling, this isn't two weeks in santa ponza, its 7 months and counting on the other side of the world, i might not have access to my own itunes for another 5 months at least

Obviously If i had acces to my itunes it to restore incase it was wipe it wouldn't be an issue.
