Virus? Windows Live Messenger not working. Help please!

I did a system restore because I think I had a virus on my laptop. Since then everything has been working fine apart from my messenger.

When I try to open it I get this message ''C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\MAIMG32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support''.

I tried to reinstall it and it didn't make a difference. I undid the system restore and when I clicked on messenger I could sign in as normal but when I did all I could see was a blue window where my online/offline contacts should have been. When I clicked this window the program froze and shut down. However prior to clicking on the window I was able to have a conversation as normal, obviously I was unable to start the conversation because I couldn't see who was online.

I did the system restore again and the original problem returned. The initial virus I had was a ''my online scan'' pop up virus. Does anyone have any knowledge that could help me?

I tried to run the comedien.exe file but when I had done the system restore it wouldn't open for me. When I undid the system restore it did work but no virus' etc were found following that. The problem still remains. I have repeated the system restore to an earlier date now and the problem hasn't been solved.

Maybe it might be something to do with having MSN running in the background when downloading new programmes? That idea was suggested to me but I don't know how to fix it.

Go to a previous restore point
    Uninstall Windows Live
Run a program to clean registery (I use CCleaner myself but everyone to their own!)
    Try install

If that fails, try repeated steps in Safe Mode

    I fixed it thanks!

I deleted it all again. Deleted the folder in the start menu. Ran cleanmgr and restarted the computer and installed again. It's running like a dream now!

Thanks for your reply however :)
