A friend from Cork is looking for an apartment to rent in Galway city centre at the moment. She says that all prospective landlords are telling her that she will be obliged to buy City Bin bags from newsagents

Is this the norm? How much do they cost? Which shops sell them?

    Not quite true.

They are telling her that the easiest option is buying single City Bins bags from newsagents.

But she could also buy bags from the council on College Rd (e45 for 15 normal ones, not sure of the cost for recycling ones, maybe e15 for 15). Or a bag of bags directly from City Bins (cheaper than the council per bag, but you have to buy a larger amount). Or from Barna Waste (no idea what they cost).

A one or two person household is hard pressed to fill a bag a a week, or even a fortnight. but rubbish inside apartments makes 'em smelly. This makes bags expensive, unless you think laterally (sharing with a neighbour is the most obvious approach, dumping your rubbish in on-street bins is the most illegal one, but there are other options too, PM me for details if interested.).

Another option,if your friend has a car or a friend with one, and maybe a balcony/shed with the apartment, is take the bags his/herself to Barna Waste depot on Headford Road. A lot of 'brown bin' waste can go down the toilet.
