    Well

Early poster long time reader. Basically im a civil engineering student in Athlone IT in my final year of the honours degree course. Ive gone through the long route, i.e. the 5 year IT course, and il admit ive got myself this far without killing myself with study (wats da point sure its college anyway:D) This year has been a killer though projects left, right, centre; thesis, scheme design etc. Now unfortunately last summer before i entered 5th year I wasnt able to get a placement even after pestering people Id work unpaid, no luck. So I have to defer it but more than likely taking a fail. So thats leaves me with predictament of, if i fail something else il only get a third class honours which ive been told is pretty worthless or drop out and finish it in a year or 2 after understanding what engineering is actually like as a job.

IMO im certain to fail somethin else cos i havent worked anything like some of my peers due to lack of motivation/interest really on not gettin placement when most of my class mates did. Also job opportunities are poor ATM as we all know.

Now im interested in construction/civil engineering (wouldnt ave stuck it out this far if i wasnt) but i would love to take year out getting experience even if it was unpaid for a while and come back in year or 2 knowing firstly do i want to have this as a career. I dont know whether to continue on hope for best get a pass degree or come back in a year or 2 with that motivation to get a top degree. I dont want to sound arrogant but ive achieved distinctions along the way and i know i am capable of gettin that again but i know the best I can get this year is pass... Anyways, looking for advice from any graduates or maybe any lads in the field who may have contacts on taking students on for work placement. Cheers

    Hello there Ballyhaunis,
not sure if its exactly what you were hoping for but this consultancy firm were looking at any rate..........
    http://www.minerex.ie/minerex/Main/Current_Vacancies.htm

Don't write it off however -its worth contacting to see what they say & the experience may suprise you re: interview skills; Project Mangament etc.

If you get it do let us know how you get on.
    GOOD LUCK!

Note to the uber-MOD's of boards.ie:
Although there are, I'm sure, other appropriate channels for placement vancancies (you would think/hope so anyway....) given the curent economic climate is it worth a sticky here on the forum for eng./tech. companies to post links to oppurtunities they might have for young students/graduates?

    Just an idea,

    SM
