Can someone please clarify what is the right oil to put in the engine. The oil light is going on and off so am thinking it's running low. Have searched the web and found loads of different reccomendations so went into halfords and used the chart, but the closest model it had to mine was an e46 320di. No I on the boot badge though. I got the oil which is mobil 1 5w-30. Any ideas of this would be ok to use or could it kill the car and cost a fortune?

Petrol or Diesel?? I would guess the Petrols would use the more expensive Longlife stuff. Approx 60ish quid or so for 5 litres of it. Have a look in the service booklet/owners handbook...should have the info on it and the spec required

Have a look in the Owner's Manual. It will tell you which oil to use.

thanks for the replys. Have had a look at the manual and just giving bmw references, nothing like what is on the bottle. The bottle does however say its reccomended for bmw, but does it matter which model of bmw?

The manual will say somewhere that oil of grade 5W - 30 (or the like) is recommended. I'd be highly surprised if it doesn't.

IIRC the spec you're looking for is BMW LL04. Just bought a gallon (well, 4 litres) yesterday for mine in Halfords. Castrol Edge is what the dealers use and it seems to have come down in price. Last time I bought it, it was almost €70. Yesterday it was €49. Ow30 for the petrols and 5w40 for the diesels as far as I know. If you haven't opened the Mobil, I'd try bringing it back and changing it.

Have you checked the level with the dipstick? The oil level sensors are problematic on these - check the oil, on level ground, before adding.

BMW LL04 is 0w40 fully synthetic.

BMW LL04 is 0w40 fully synthetic.

LL04 is available in a number of grades.

    OP have a look here:

    http://www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7044829

Obviously that will only give you the Castrol recommendation but if the stuff you got is the same grade and meets the same BMW specs, then you're golden.

Thanks for that, it says in this link that it meets the spec for BMW LL04 at the bottom although it isn't 0w 40w:confused:
