Replace cable modem, ATA & wireless router into one box?

    Hello,

    My setup is as follows:
    1. An NTL cable modem
    2. A netgear ATA (to Blueface)
    3. A Dell wireless modem & router

I'm wondering if I can replace the above (including the associated individual power supplies) into one unit? Does such a unit exist?

It would be nice also if it had open firmware such as the Linksys WRT54G.

    Regards,

    Leo

The Fritz box seems to fit.

I use a Draytek Vigor device .... http://www.draytek.co.uk/ ... my model does not have the modem built in but other models do.
It has two telephone connections for VOIP
Can register up to six separate VOIP accounts and has a rule section to allow you to specify which VOIP account to use for different calls.
Lots of other stuff also including QOS etc.
No problem with it in the last three years.

I just connect it to the existing modem/router bypassing the router part.

There are many such devices from different manufacturers ... I would be inclined to look for QOS in whatever you get ....

You can combine the ATA with the wireless route, but not the NTL modem, NTL wont allow it.

The Fritz!Box will not be able to be used instead of the cable modem. It can get its interent connection from it but can't replace it (as its inbuild modem is ADSL).

Many thanks for all the replies. The fritz box seems fairly good, looks like wireless phones can connect directly to this. Will investigate further. Does it have open firmware?

I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to replace the NTL modem. But could I change the MAC address of the new modem to the NTL modem?

Got this reply from UPC (eventually!)

    Dear Sir

I have received an update from our Technical Support Desk, they have advised that you would be unable to replace the modem, you would have to use the modem that we supplied. They have advised however that you can change your wireless modem, you just need to ensure that the router is a cabled router.

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to email us on customer.support@upc.ie
