Dónal Óg Cusack an Inspiration to come out!

I have been following Dónal Óg Cusack story over the last week saw him on the Late Late on Friday and I think he is doing great for us gay people. I feel myself that I could nearly come out to my family now as he has really done everyone proud. Coming out is something I have been fearing, I have gotten to terms with my sexuality very much so over the past few months and Dónal Óg has made me more confident.
Its just the thing of telling my family as we are extremely close, I don’t know any other family as close as we, me and my brother are each others best friends. We are that close that I had to set up this new user account as he knows my other and all my posts and would see this. My big fear that they won’t cope well, brother for obvious reason, mother as she always says that she hopes her two boys will get good women and about grandchild and big family holidays in the future blah blah. Then there the father who could go totally man though he didn’t seem too bothered about Dónal Óg been gay. Thing is there always parsing me telling me how great I am, they give me a great life all my wants and needs without be spoiled, I get on really with them there no other family I know off like us! But this is the worry that all this will change if it tell them! Sorry for the long post but I have never talked to anybody about being gay before! Just look for your taughts thanks.

Do you know that you can post anonymously on this board but can be banned for admitting you have two accounts ?

Anyway back on topic, I think he has done wonders for people accepting Homosexuality. Pity he thought only to come out upon the release of his new Biography.

Well some say inspirational, others say opportunist :p

Anyway, there are 2 threads about Donal so ill say no more on that XD

What I would say to you is that you should only come out if you feel your ready. Dont be so sure that its going to ruin your relationship with your family, surely if you are all so close and you dont believe any of them to be homophobic then theres every chance things will be fine.

As for what your mother said about the grandkids and big family holidays etc, its what a lot of mothers say/think - understandably so, given its 97-98%ish likely you would be straight. Altho regardless of this, times are changing, she may still get those grandkids... heh but lets not get ahead of ourselves...

In your own time mate, gl with it ;)

Donal og is an inspiration, (Which as a tipp man I find it hard 2 say ) however a bigger inspiration are his family for standing by him. I would agree with the opinion of being a little bit careful about coming out to one's family. Suss out the situation and see the reaction they have to this story?

I came out to my family, not sorry I did but we don't speak anymore, and I was told never to darken the door of the house again. My mother told me she'd burn the sheets off my bed when I was gone ( which was hilarious as my brother and sister had slept around way more than I did I was still a virgin) I'm not sorry I did it as it made me stronger and I got on with my life but Donal og's story isn't always the way things turn out!

Oh god I hope my story doesn't put people off, look I am sure my case is not the norm! I'm sorry I said it, on a positive I have good friends who support me and are much better than family I spend christmas birthdays celebrate highs and lows and they accept me for who I am a fairly normal guy who happens to be gay. Again please don't let my story put anyone off sorry again!

You shouldnt be sorry. Theres no point in sugar coating the truth and any true story is inspirational. Yours is sad to hear but i think you're great to be able to stand up for who you are, despite all thats happening. You're stronger than me to deal with that.

Having multiple accounts is not an offence in itself, having another account to circumvent a ban is......

My brother is Gay, Has been out since he was 20. He has a partner for the last 10 years. His partner is 100% like a brother/Son to the family. I can understand families having difficulties coming to terms with a son/daughter being gay, but not speaking to them is really disgusting. Leaving aside the whole moral debate on homosexuality, society needs to understand its not a choice its part of a person. Us as a family have always supported my brother. Your family should have kept their judgements to themselves, you had nothing to be ashamed of!>

it's great for young men who simply don't identify with a stereotype that is so often represented in the media.
Being gay doesn't mean that you cant succeed in any area of your life and that you can be a top class sportsperson is a great message.

Good on you Donal hopefully you've paved the way for others
