    Hi guys ,

Im a student in DCU, from a normal catholic family, but been a non-believer since I developed the ability to think a few years back. Just wondering what societies, if any, exist in other colleges around the country. There is nothing in DCU, and i guess while part of me thinks that there is no need to form a society to showcase the lack of something, i still feel like there needs to be a more formal representation of our views which by their nature, do not demand attention.

Id like to hear from any other college groups and what you have done, or how you have been recieved, as I am interested in getting something going here in DCU.

    Cheers,

    Michael

UCD now has a Secular Humanist Society, which kicked off at the beginning of this semester. Going pretty well so far, I think.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

There was a suggestion for one awhile ago on the DCU forum, I think it didn't go ahead because they couldn't really figure out what they'd actually do

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

We have an active one in UCC, UCC Atheist Soc (http://www.uccatheists.com).

There are two others; one in NUIG (NUIG Skeptic Soc) and another in UCD (UCD Secular Humanists).

Not sure where the notion of having nothing to do comes from; we have guest speakers, hold debates, show films and documentaries, organise socials. Plenty to do.

Great way to meet likeminded folk. I'd recommend starting one up.

Almost forgot; if you do go about setting one up, contact the Secular Student Alliance for free affiliation. They're excellent to us, give free business cards, posters, grants for guest speakers, group t-shirts, all sorts of stuff. Plus free webspace and email addy. Can't recommend them enough. :)

Good to see the Secular Student Alliance getting a plug here. The Chair of their Board of Directors, Hemant Mehta, wrote a great book called I Sold My Soul on eBay. He's known as 'the friendly atheist'. http://www.secularstudents.org/node/413

I'm in the process of setting up an atheist/humanist society in DCU (see thread on DCU forum). I have the forms and a meeting with the Clubs and Socs officer set up for next Thursday. We just need a constitution (working on that), 20 signatures in support and a committee. Interested in being a committee member? PM me.

After seeing the success of the societies in UCC and NUIG I think we could model ourselves on them. Also look at the success of Islam Soc in DCU. We'll have speakers, movie showings, trips etc.
Again, if interested PM me here or catch me around campus (ask in clubs and socs office for Niall Farrell)

Can I be the friendly agnostic? :)

I don't think we'd be able to set up a secular/atheist soc here in Mary Immacculate College. It'd be me and one other guy here on boards. :p

an atheit soc in Mary Immacculate would be ironically funny, but do you realise that legally you won't be able to get a job in a primary public faith school if your an outed atheist.
