There wouldve been worse sound problems had they made onto the stage.

Whatever excuses they can have for not showing up would be lame in comparison to Aslan managing to make it to their gig.

must've left the fans in a sticky mess.

Well the general trend was most people came for Blizzards,a few left as of that as well.

I've seen them a couple of times and they're pretty crap live, even though I like their music. Saw Aslan live last year, and they were actually really really good, would definitely go again.

The Blizzards suck and so do Aslan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,659 ✭✭✭veryangryman

Anyone got anything to add other than "they suck". Its been said already, form an original opinion.

I think that while they are not the best band out there, they knock the box out of Aslan, Picture House, Paddy Casey, Sharon Shannon and numerous other "big" irish acts. This despite being from the midlands, hardly a haven for rock music.

I see them as a talented bunch of musicians who maybe got too big too quickly. The second album should have been scrapped before release. It happens. However, Neil and the guys are fun live, interact with the crowd and do some fantastic covers in addition to their own stuff.

I've seen them 7-8 times now and while i wouldnt be running to see them if it meant going out of my way, i dont think they deserve this "their sh1t" nonsense. Boards is a class site but i have no time for people on it being negative just for the sake of it.

On the subject of The Blizzards and Aslan there possibly needs to be a little context added here. This was an open air gig at the end of October. Even summer gigs are dodgy when you factor in Irish weather. I know because I have run several of them. Secondly the cash strapped Cobh Ramblers have no history in this area and involved no promoter. Add to this the bank holiday weekend, jazz in Cork and struggling publicans trying to hold on to trade. Finally add in a day of drizzle (not exactly blizzard levels) and as St Colman's Park is on top of a hill, in came the sea fog and obliterated the stage from view from anywhere other than up close (as one should be anyway).
The stage was very professional and had a superb sound system. Local bands, of whom there are several quite talented ones, played to a virtual empty park, and by the time Blizzards, who might consider changing their name to The Damp Squib, would have performed (7-7.30) there were no more than 150 people on the soggy field. 'The Drizzle' obviously took a view and opted not to play. They did Cobh Ramblers a favour I would venture as there were only a few hundred tickets sold anyhow and the finacial hole was getting deeper. ENTER ASLAN...
Early in their set the very up for it Aslan dedicated their Dark side of the Moon song 'Wish you were here' to the missing Blizzards with a suggestion that perhaps they should consider changing their name. Against the cold foggy elements Christy Dignam worked the magic of a real professional. No hold back in the committment to the performance, choosing songs with sing along chorus' like the elongated dup du den du da of Wish you were here' that involved a willing audience that may have grown to 200. ..... How can I protect you in this Craaaazy world exercised the majority of the fog chilled vocals of the audience. Volunteering that Aslan were adding an additional half hour to their gig because 'The Blizzards f**k*d off ' the audience were again exhorted to sing along. This showed the difference between the real professionals who care about their audience and self obsessed prima donna's.
Now I have not mentioned that the tickets for this gig were 20 Euros !. That was for TWO top line bands and a feast of local talent. Even allowing for the volatility of the Irish weather, Cobh and its so called music fans come out of this with as little credibility as The Bizzards. Those who come out of this with their reputation enhanced are Chisty Dignam and particularly the members of the band who gave their absolute fullest committment to salvaging the day. Finally to the naieve committee in Cobh Ramblers I give some credit for well intentioned but blind misadventure.
