I've always hated the description they used but does anyone know if SW is actually paying it this year. I know they said it was gone in April emergency budget but then they said otherwise a little while longer...anyone know what the heck is really happening??

The Christmas bonus payment has been abolished.

this was a hangover from the days when the country wasnt broke. It should have been abolished long ago IMO but to answer your question, yes it has been abolished

No I just remember seeing it on RTE, with the minister saying it was being re-instated.

The Minister- being Mary Hannafin, has said no such thing.
Its very definitely not reinstated- the departmental budget has its abolition factored in- there is no money there to make 'bonus' payments to anyone. There are no payments or schemes being reinstated- there are numerous cuts on the cards though...... If you really expect any of the cuts to be rolled back- you're sadly mistaken.......

Here is a brief Indymedia article on the proposed further cuts to social welfare benefits- which also emphasises that the Christmas 'bonus' is not going to be reinstated. here

With the dole being 204.30, I only took out 200 every week and left the 4.30 in the post office so at the end of the year I would have my own "Xmas Bonus"

Its actually gone in vastly increased numbers of people claiming social welfare payments. We are borrowing almost EU28m a day to pay social welfare and related disbursements- thats at least partially where its gone. The lack of tax receipts (Q3 receipts to the end of September are due out tomorrow)- is also another factor- its not nice- but if the government aren't getting the money in in tax receipts- they can't pay them out the door in social welfare and other expenditure. We are about 3 billion down a month on where we were last year (which wasn't exactly a boom year), and this fall in receipts is accelerating.

Its a case of running out of Peters to rob, to pay Paul. Somethings got to give- and that is social welfare disbursements, public sector pay, pensions, capital expenditure etc.

We are cutting 4 billion from the budget in December. Despite what the media would have you believe- this is actually going to be the easy part. The far more difficult part will be finding another 4 billion to cut in 2010, and a further 4 billion the following year........ This is what we have signed up to do, nonetheless........

So, we are living in what, next year, we will look back on as the good old days.

If the negative projections for next year are accurate, then yes. unfortunately. This government believes (mistakenly imo) that you can tax your way out of a recession but this is not the case. If we stimulate consumer spending by reducing VAT/Excise/other stealth taxes, maybe we will be over the recession quicker.

The alternative? The recession becomes a depression.
