there was a post here telling you how to guess what firmware and more importantly the baseband firmware by checking the serial number.

go in with that information and check all the serial numbers, they'll think you're crazy in the shop but **** it, you'll have a phone that can be unlocked.

id ask for a link to that post but the search is still down isnt it ?

    Key,

It was me who started the Thread that related to the new Bootrom that cannot be Jailbroken.

    Bootrom whats a Bootrom ???? I hear u say ?

Well let me explain in a quick and simplistic way ...
There was a hole in the bootrom on all iPhones (forget about firmware this is something completly different) that was exploited which allowed all known jailbreak methods to work .(Redsnow , Pawnage ,Blackra1n etc)

This "hole" has now been closed by Apple , it is calculated that they released this new bootrom sometime in week 40 on all iPhones .
As you have read from my original post HERE ,if you buy a iphone with this new Bootrom then it cannot be jailbroken or Unlocked .

Now back to the firmware ...

If you have a phone thats on 3.1.2 (the latest version) which was made before week 40 then it can still be jaibroken using Blackra1n for example .
The reason is this firmware can still be jaibroken if the phone still has the old version of Bootrom , the one with the "hole" i was on about earlier.

    Unlocking ...
If you are buying a iphone fresh today with firmware 3.1.2 then you will NOT be unable to unlock it to other networks , regardless of week of manufacture.

If you have a iPhone with a older firmware ( e.g 3.0 ) then it is possible to update the firmware to 3.1.2 and still hold onto your unlock .
This is achieved by using a "custom firmware" which we cannot talk about here .

    Hope this Helps .
    M

    Jailbreak is week 40.
    unlock is week 36.

Yep if you bought it today you most likely won't be able to jailbreak or unlock

Quite possibly. But yesterday I bought a 32g 3gs in carphone warehouse, headford road shopping centre, Galway.
I jailbroke and unlocked it today.
They had one more there manufactured in week 36.
People just need to ask to have a look at the box before they purchase.

You definitely can't. There's no unlock for a brand new 3.1..not even a jailbreak

Dodzy , well spotted my mistake , I am missing the word "not" from my post .. I will update it now .
I must have had a couple of beers in me at the time of writing.

So to clarify . . A new phone bought today and made after week 40 cannot be jailbroken or unlocked .

A phone bought today which was made circa week 36 could still be jailbroken and unlocked ( if running on firmware 3.01 or lower)

got the iphone 3gs, week 36 was made gonna try jailbreak it now

    Well done!
    I used redsnow to jailbreak.
No need to do anything with itunes at all so skip that part in the iclarified guide.
Make sure and use the 3.0 ispw instead of the 3.0.1
I tried to use ultrasnow to unlock it but for some reason cydia doesn't want to update using wifi.
I found another way to unlock it without wifi....google rizwan ultrasnow.
    Good luck!

which are you lookin for 16gb or 32 gb? when i was looking in the shops the 16gb ones seemed to be all newer batch , the 32gb were a few weeks older which was handy of course .

To be honest i the 3g model would suit me economically, but my rebel side is saying go the extra mile for the 3gs 16gb

This sounds like pretty big news

If it's true that all new iphones can no longer be jailbroken or unlocked (ever?) I wonder does that mean that 'classic' iphones with the exploit in the rom will go up in value as only they can be manipulated by the owner/user?

So much for Apple's alleged benevolent tolerance of the jailbreak/unlock community.

Hang on to your pre-40-week iphones lads - looks like they will be collectors' items before too long......

True enough. Although I'm on a jailbroken 16gig 3G model, I wouldn't even contemplate a straight swap for a shiney new 3GS if it can't be jailbroken. Frankly, a vanilla iPhone doesn't appeal at all having used a jailbroken for the past 6 months.

Not being able to Skype anywhere would be a big downer for me not to mention all the other goodies that a jailbroken phone can do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 345 ✭✭Gibs

Couldn't agree more! For me being able to skype anywhere over 3g is the killer feature of a Jb iPhone.

    UPDATE
3GS can know be jailbroken regardless of firmware or Bootrom version , for more detail info read HERE

A tethered jailbreak means that if your phone is switched off , looses power or an App crashes , you will need to hook it up to your computer and run Blackra1n again to jailbreak

I like being able to reboot, turn off, crash my apps without having to re-jailbreak. What a pain the a$$ that'd be.

    TinCool,

Lets not forget that the guys who hack and modify and release such Jailbreaks , DO IT FOR FREE !

If this is whats available at present , good I will take it , and i will also contribute if i use it .

    A Tethered Jailbreak :
A pain in the Ass ?................ maybe ,but not so bad !
Do I appreciate it ?................Yes !
'V' no jalbreak at all ? ............I would bite their hand off !

Hi Guys don't really post on here (more on adverts) . This thread is very usefull i have to day.
Just a quick question. I bought an iphone16gb 3gs on 02 about 3 weeks ago.

Are there any issues with jailbreaking your phone and using it normally on the 02 network?? Also. What about the app store/ itunes.

I have jailbroken my 1st gen ipod touch when you had to do it over FTP is that the case with the iphone?

Basically what i'm asking is are there advantages of jailbreaking the phone if i have no intention of changing networks?

If you want to jailbreak your phone , it has never been easier ...

    Go to HERE
Select your operating system (Windows or Mac )
    Download to your desktop .
Plug your phone into your P.C (If iTunes opens , close it)
Double click on the "blackra1n.exe" on your desktop .
    Click "make it rain"
    Follow the instructions
    10 secs later ..your jaibroken.

On your phone you will see a "blackra1n" App .
    Open it .
Install Cydia or whatever you prefer .

Go back HERE AND DONATE !

    end .
