Old school diesel engine, while it won't pull the skin off a sausage they give very little trouble. No fancy injectors, etc so just make sure you have a mechanic give it a good check.

Also note that these were popular among taxi drivers so look for tell tale signs such as holes in the dash where a meter was located, second aerial, etc.

Also check when the timing belt was last changed. Price wise I'd haggle anyway and see how you get on.

Though saying all that my money would probably be on something like this instead:

The auld fella had one of these and I was insured on it for a few years! His was a 1.6L and wasnt the most powerful engine - so like Bazz says - the 2.0D wont be amazing either!
Know a fella that uses his to drive to work - 200 mile round trip! 200K miles on the clock now - not a bother on it!
Decent, comfortable car - cant go wrong really! Sound advice from Bazz!

The engine in those are bullet proof if looked after. Far superior car to the model that replaced it too

Thanks to everyone who replied so far..........great help!!:)

But just wondering what people make out of the two I listed at the start of thread???

Pricewise good or bad for that year?? Not looking for anything to go racing in just something reliable to get me to and from work, nothing major!

Surely that Laguna is worth more than 50 squid? Put it on done deal and see what happens. Whats up with it?

I'd be inclined to go for the 02. Its newer, lower mileage and has air con and alloys for a minimal extra outlay

I had a petrol Primera for years and it was great.

The diesel model however is a pig and needs about 10 minutes warm-up time to get anywhere over 60kmph.

They aint that bad. Only 90 brake alright but they're fine. All diesels take longer to warm up compared to a petrol

    A turbo-diesel BMW/Audi doesn't.

    Drivers window reg gone,
Gearbox (me thinks) went today. (At a roundabout and tried to take off in 1st and when I came off the clutch there was this horrible clunking sound and the car not moving)

Thats because they have heater elements in the dash for the ventilation to be warm sooner
