People always seem to diss those companies which have become popular (or have been popular in the past), but Dell for me are still a great company to purchase from. As they were once very popular, people only focus on the negative aspects of them. You should remember - however - that there are both negative and positive aspects to every company.

While saying this, others I recommend are Compaq, IBM (of course), and Hewlett Packard. Dixons (or whatever they're called now) usually have some good ones in stock, but I'd prefer to just buy online at http://www.dell.ie

What's your price range? There's a neat little 'minibook' (a reduced-sized laptop with lower specs) for 299 Euro on that website (here: http://ireland.dell.com/ie/en/home/Laptops/laptop-inspiron-10/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-inspiron-10&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1). HOWEVER< I think that you should wait a while untl PCs available for purchase come with Windows 7 installed. You'll find right now that companies will be seeling off their old stocks of PCs with XP or Vista still installed on them.

You'll hear a lot of negative comments about Windows 7 from guys who like to diss Microsoft constantly (but who then are happy to use many Microsoft products themselves), but Windows 7 is the way forward.

    Kevin

There's a Laptops forum where you might get some ideas.
What kind of budget do you have?

do not buy a Dell mini. they are a great little laptop that will do everything you need, but the touch pad on them is absolutely awful, the worst i've ever come across, rendering the thing next to near impossible to use without attaching a mouse.

OP, for your specs a netbook would be fine. Generally speaking most people find the Samsung's to be the best. have a look at the Samsung N140

You mean Samsung? I forgot to mention them. BBC 'click' (a technology review programme) decided that Samsung laptops were the best overall.
