Trade up or trade down

Okay, my car is getting old and faults are popping up to get repaired. Money isn't as flush as it once was and I'm not sure what to do. My Dad offered to give me his car and I flog mine on, give him some of the proceeds and keep some for myself.

    My car is a '00 5 series 2.0 litre, his is a '01 Focus 1.6 saloon.

As much as his car has very little mileage and it floated through the NCT, and goes 100%, I feel it's a step down to what I am driving.

I would prefer to trade up to another 5, maybe a '01/'02 with a nice service history. Might even push to go 525 diesel to save money. Maximum cash I would trade with would be 1,500 euro.

    Any ideas?

Well, I don't really want to be taking his car, and it's not as comfortable as mine. It would make sense for him to keep it as a low miler and get something for it when he trades in.

Would I be better running mine into the ground?

There isn't a garage in the country that will trade your 00 5 Series for a 01/02 5 Series for €1500. And that was even assuming your old car was in tip top shape. The minimum you would be talking about to trade up is €4k imo.

Also you state that you present car is getting old and faults are popping up, going from a 9 year old car to a 7 or 8 year old car may not change that prospect by much.

My advice is to either get the 5 Series repaired and keep it or take the Focus and take the hit and sell the 5 Series cheap.
