Laser Pointers Pt 2

Just going to take a different approach to this topic.

Cant believe the stupidity of some people pointing those lasers at aircraft. Ive heard of it happening in Dublin Airport a few times but im just wondering how often does it actually happen? To be honest, i have one worth 100 euro with a solid beam and it burns matches, baloons, insulation tape and the likes. BUT its only a party piece.

The problem with these lasers is the range, there is a 6000 foot range on most of the high powered green ones so the reality is that anyone can get their hands on one and anyone anywhere near the airport can shine it at a aircraft ans with a 6000 fott range thats a lot of the area of the city you could hit the plane from.

the red ones are baby lasers but these green ones are scary powerful. if mine burns a match then what would it do to a pilot(or anyone) that was on approach and got hit with one of these in the eye.

    Its pretty scary.

What you have is highly dangerous and never used at a party, one flick towards the eyes could blind someone if it got into the wrong hands.

A while ago there was a fad to convert mini mag torches into 659mn lasers by replacing the bulb holder with a diode kit fitting the laser out of a DVD burner, they could burst baloons and ignite fireworks from several meters away.

Its not only airline pilots that are being affected, Ambulance workers in the UK have been "attacked" by laser pointers

What amazes me is that more people aren't on the radio messing with ATC / aircraft. You'd think that would be encrypted but anyone with an airband transciever could do it with potentially disasterous consequences.

Not to mention highly illegal. They're really not something you want to get caught with.

Airband radios are just for hearing/listening to communication between ATC and aircraft. You can't broadcast on these radios, if this is along the lines you are thinking?

I own a transciever which I use legally to talk to other aircraft / ATC etc for flying as I am licenced to do so, but I was never ever asked to prove that I knew how to use it, or even that I should own such an item when I got it.

Anyone could buy one on ebay and start issuing dodgy commands to aircraft at busy airports. Nuts isn't it?

Can you imaging the cost of changing or modifying the VHF sets carried on aircraft and by ATC the world over. It would have to be carried out the world over. Somethoing I can never see happening although research has been carried out in this field but I think it was into replacing HF radio.
