Noobie question - sore knees!

I started running in early August and am running a 5k + atm 3 times a week and hoping to work upwards gradually.

I didnt do anything different on my run last night, stretched afterwards, same route etc, but this morning my knees were killing me. Left knee especially. I found it really difficult to bear weight on it coming downstairs.

Just wondering if it sounds familiar. How can I prevent it in the future? I guess I should take a couple of days break from running?

Sorry if stupid question, I have a lot to learn.

It sounds familiar - lots of runners face sore knees.

Firstly, let me point out that medical advice cannot be given out on the internet as it is impossible for anyone to know what is wrong with you without physically examining your knee. So if you have any extreme pain or discomfort, go to your GP.

However, having said that, a lot of knee pain expierenced by people who run is usually caused by (A) runners being worn, (B) surface being ran on, or sometimes a combination of both.

Make sure you have a good quality pair of runners that are comfortable. What type of surface are you running on? Cement can often be hard on the knees, but sometimes tarmac can be a bit more forgiving (it sounds odd, but in my expierence tarmac is less tiring on the knees). If that fails, try running on grass or even tight sand.

HI, thanks for reply. Sorry I deleted this post, posted twice!

I was running on concrete and tarmac, mostly tarmac because I'm conscious of it being better on my knees.

Only thing I can think of is I ran quite hard from the offset whereas I usually warm up with a brisk walk first (started with couch to 5k and you do this every time ;)) or a very slow jog. Would that do it?

Are your runners wearing out? That might be an indicator.

Also, you might get someone who knows what they are talking about to look at your running style. If you are crashing down on your heels then undoubtedly it will impact adversley on your knees .

Runners are only a few months old.

I ran a faster pace and further than I did last night before with no injuries, cant understand it.

I'm hoping it's not going to be a recurring problem.

Righto, then I'd say take a day or two rest then ease back into it. But it will re-occur if caused by poor running form. Get someone have a look.

    Will do, thanks.

I've joined a club, so hopefully bad form will be rectified! :)

Don't count on it. Make a positive effort to seek out a proper coach there who can advise properly. In my experience clubs just let the athletes get on with doing their sessions without consideration for style, posture etc.

    Good luck.

Your knees are weak and bony, you need muscle around them, do squats.

Or else buy Nike Air they are unreal.

    Good luck in your running.

Still painful today. Will give it another few days I guess: It's killing me not to be able to run though :(
