College Laptop

    Hi all,

buying my sister a laptop as she's going back to college, my budget will stretch to 600, what I would like is 3gig ram, dual core or if possible core 2 duo processor, wouldnt need much hard-drive space or a graphics card, she'd at most be playing the sims 3 but other than that its all facebook/word/excel!

From doing plenty of different dell builds this is the best I can come up with thats under budget :

COLOUR CHOICE Black Colour with Matte Finish
    PROCESSOR Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T4300 (2.1GHz, 800MHz, 1MB cache)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit- English
OFFICE SOFTWARE Microsoft® Office 2007 Home and Student/ English - Microsoft® Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint
HARDWARE SUPPORT 1 year of coverage included with your PC
    LCD 15.6" Widescreen WXGA CCFL (1366 x 768) TFT Display with TrueLife™
    MEMORY 3072MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [1x2048 + 1x1024]
HARD DRIVE 250GB (5,400rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
GRAPHICS CARD Intel Integrated GMA 4500MHD
OPTICAL DRIVE DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD)
PRIMARY BATTERY Primary 6-cell 46 WHr Lithium Ion battery
WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY Dell Wireless 1397 Mini Card (802.11 b/g)
    BLUETOOTH No Bluetooth Upgrade
    WEBCAM No Camera Included

Is this a decent spec for the price? Would you get a similar spec from pc world or somewhere for less?

I start to wonder if a decent acer laptop for 400quid would do her just fine and im only picking these specs as I myself wouldnt want to use anything below it, but maybe its too much for what she'd need it for?

That does seem like a bit of overkill for what she may need. I would just go for the Dell basic 1525 and add 2Gigs a RAM. Costs about 434.

The processor isn't as good, but if she's just using it for basic college stuff it should be fine if you disable all the extra crap it comes bundles with.
