Photocell

Can anyone advise on photocell lighting.
Basically there is 3 outdoor fluorescent lights in a veranda. There is a switch inside controlling all 3 and they are wired in 3 core nymj. Can I just cut the outdoor cable install and photocell so there will be a live neutral and earth feed to the photocell and a live neutral and earth from the photocell to the lights.

    Thanks in advance

Check what the photocell contacts are rated to switch against the total lighting load. If the load is within spec then yes, otherwise a contactor will be required. The best place for a contactor is in the CU which will necessitate additional cabling.

It will be switching three 2D fittings. Would that be too much of a load? What is the normal load photocells are rated to switch

A stand alone external photocell I have here is rated for 1500W incandescent lamps or 1200W for fluorescent. If you get a similar one you should be fine with three lamps.
