Very dim display on radio/CD

I have a Blaupunkt San Remo CD31 radio/CD in a 02 Punto which I just bought a few days ago. While the radio and CD work, the display is very faint and can hardly be seen. Any ideas? Radio also seems to be wired incorrectly i.e. it doesn't switch off when ignition key is removed but can be switched off manually.

Some displays are designed to dim automatically when the headlights are switched on - sounds, as you say, like yours has been wired incorrectly.
