Just how stupid are lecturers these days...

Just got this email from a COMPUTING lecturer. He also deals with audio visual projects etc. and claims to be a guru at this kind of stuff.....

A couple of times recently, students have altered the display settings so that the image you see on the monitor is flipped by 90 degrees.

This means you have to essentially turn the monitor on its side in order to use it.

    A couple of things:

    - Never turn the monitor on its side, use another PC or inform your lecturer. These monitors were not designed for this and can be damaged.

    - The altering of the image is not happening accidentally, someone is doing it. Just so you know there is a camera in the room but also any changes to the display drivers are registered on the PC in a number of areas, with your Student ID, time and date stamped in most cases.

The cost of getting a monitor checked out would be a couple of hundred, the cost of replacement much more than that plus formal disciplinary proceedings against the student who altered the image.

The next time it happens, the person will be detected.

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but I did reply to his email with this image attached: http://cdn0.knowyourmeme.com/i/1582/original/picard-facepalm.jpg

Joke's on you, mate. He's clearly taking the piss in order to deter people messing with the display settings, by pretending they can be detected.

Unfortunately, he's being genuine. I know this because I had him as a lecturer for 2 years

Yes, he's scaremongering, but i' be confident that he didn't know the AltGr trick and reckons that the display was altered in Display Settings.

With the permissions (or lack of) that students have, you can't change Display Settings. Why claim someone is doing something that they can't?

A couple of hundred quid for someone to press Ctrl-Alt-UpArrow... are these guys on government contracts? Not to mention 'much more' for a new monitor.

Even if he does know, why would he go around telling people? Clearly the email is designed to stop it, not encourage it. Don't see the problem op, looks like the palm is on the other face!

Registry auditing isn't turned on by default but it's not hard to turn on if somebody is messing about with the PC or group of PCs. Dunno about linux but that's not too hard to audit for a lot of stuff too.

A monkey can fix it, but a monkey can also catch who's doing it as long as the settings are set in the registry (I'd imagine they are).

A few of us used to do that, back when we were in 2 year (in the same college as you). we used to turn the screen 180 degrees! I think I know the guy you are on about too.

I have a cultural care studies lecturer this year who, when we were discussing India and what they eat/wear over there, said "Yes and they love to wear feathers as well and the head-dresses".....

Cue shocked expressions and somebody finally saying "Eh...is that not American Indians?"

She seemed oblivious and told us it was all the same.

    Honestly? I dont think so.

Unless someone had showed me that keystroke when I was in college, in a computing course, I wouldnt have known about it either.

In fact I cant get it to work on my laptop. is it just a dell thing or have i completely missed something.

    No,
I went to the same college as John, so when I seen this thread, I thought it must be the same lecturer I had in 2nd year. A quick PM confirmed it!

We did the same monitor thing in 2nd year, same guy got pissed off.

I wonder who exactly in Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to have an option to flip the screen sideways, up or down must've been a high. But whoever thought that it also needed a shortcut that can easily be pressed by accident if you have a big clumsy right paw must have been out of their mind.

I've had a few friends ring me in a panic because they've accidentally flipped their desktop sideways, but surprisingly enough no one ever rings me in a panic because they can't turn it upside down.

He 'taught' us in the sense that we had him as a lecturer. I won't go into the details (for his own sake), but i'm sure that the few here that know the lecturer will back me up when I say that it was a self-study subject (Because the lecturer was out so often)
