Im running my first marathon on Monday and I have nothing but nerves and doubts running through my head, from my training long runs Mc Millian has me under 3.30. The most I ran in my training was 35k (21.7 miles) and i did it in 2.45 hours. The problem is that at the end I was finished and I dont know if I could have went any further. On that day I dont think I could have kept running and if I had to do another 4 or so miles I think I would have been walking a lot of them. Basically I afraid this will happen on Monday, ill get to 20 miles and there will be nothing left in the tank and ill have to walk the rest of the way. I dont know why but im starting to get real nervous about Monday, I did the half marathon a few weeks ago and went up to it full of confidence knowing that I could run the whole distance but on Monday Im not so sure.......

This is normal. Everyone feels this way, even those of us who have run the distance many times before fear that they can't run 26 miles on Monday.

+1. But once you get going you'll be fine. Remember, even elite athletes have nerves and doubts, its all part of the 'fun'.:D

Similiar thoughts here - done a 5km this morning, and was fecked after it... Thinking to myself, there is 37km more to go on Monday, still think you can do that...

Dundalk I know exactly how you feel.

I am doing my first this year and cranked out 18m several weeks back in 2.13 and felt great through the run. Then two weeks later on same circuit did 24m with fantasies of breaking 3hrs. Taking gels at 6, 12 and 18 miles, I started the last 6m lap in some pain. But by 22m was feeling pains everywhere and slumped over the line in 3.09. I'm gunning for just sub 3.30 but on that experience wouldn't smell it?

I hoping that 3 things will help. The rest on the lead in week, the more careful carb loading and finally, the crowd.

But as I'm sure you know, whatever happens just run within yourself.

    Best of luck.

Nerves are good, they'll keep you focused. Be positive though and don't think about it the negative stuff too much. Anytime it pops into your head just visualize yourself crossing the line. Start telling yourself 'I'm really looking forward to this'. You've probably done the training so back yourself and just be positive. Its not doubts, doubts, doubts its just nerves, nerves, nerves and thats not a bad thing.
