Buying a laptop in the states.

Hi Guys, Im heading to New York in December with my gf and was thinking of buying a laptop. My plan for bringing it home was to throw away the packaging and carry it in my backpack (hand luggage), obviously to avoid customs and paying import tax. Is this a good idea? is there anything else i should know? Cheers Brian
