I'm being made redundant in 2 weeks and I have been looking for other jobs. People don't even reply to say no thanks anymore! They must be swamped with applications.

Anyway, my job is construction/new building based and all of my experience is within this industry. I know that for a while I will find it difficult to get a job. I was hoping to do a course while I was looking, but apparently you have to be unemployed for 6 months before you can do one.

Is there any way around this? If I can't do a FAS course just yet, is there any sort of support for mature students who go back to study full time? Obviously another job would be my first choice, but if I don't get one, I don't want to sit around fermenting here in the house.

it all depends on the wages you had before you took the course. Grants and such are based on the year before.

    Hi Helena,
I'm in a similar situation to yourself, and I was told that I would have to be unemployed for six months and claiming Job Seekers Allowance rather than benefit to be applicable for grants to go back to school. The SW officer I was discussing it with was a little unsure of teh full fact though, so I'm making further enquiries, but he felt that you had to be a minimum of 9 months on Job seekers Benefit to qualifiy for any assistance.

Also apply with the cao in Feb for courses in Sept. A plc course for next year should be applied for asap. There were loads of people left without a plc course in sept.

In the interim I'm sure you're allowed do their online training courses once you're registered with them for free.

There's a list here if there's anything that might interest you.
