iphone 3gs 16gb software for sms

    i have a iphone 3gs 16gb with the latest version of software on it v3.1.2, i tunes tells me that this is the latest version and no updates are available. the thing is my mate has the same phone as me but he can attach a picture to his sms messages but i cant. he has the camera icon beside where you write the message and i dont.
    any suggestions?
