When Taxing a Car..

Say, if you tax it today, the 22nd for 3 months, is the car taxed till the end December or till the 22nd of January?

Car was off the road for 2 month - not back dating the tax and getting the form stamped by the garda.

If you tax it today for 3 months it will be taxed for the month of October, November and December.

Always best to tax it at the begining of the month rather than the end.

You have to wait til November to get the form stamped, remember.

Yea, but there's a date on all tax discs. So if say, I was to tax from the 15th of Oct...the tax disc will read 12-2009 but will have a date of the 15th december under this?

You have to pay tax in advance .and tax is always to the last day of the month
So for you if you go to tax office with your form stamped to the 22. you will pay 10 days arrears(which brings you up to date) and then tax it for 3/6/12 months.

End of December - it's three calendar months.

Your last tax disc expired end July 09, you didn't drive it during August or September and now you want to tax it so you can drive it October. That right? You will have to pay for the whole month of October, and November and December. Or have you already driven it in October? If so, your hands are tied, it's too late to wait till next week to get the form stamped, then tax it from November onward.

On another note, if you've only just bought the car (in October) then August and September are not your problem. You can tax it as normal and pay the three months with no worries about stamping forms or arrears.

Don't forget that if you drove at any point (even just pulling it out of the garden so you've a level surface to check the oil) during the calendar months of August and September you'll have to pay arrears for them. Technically. But in reality, I know someone who was stopped at numerous checkpoints and still got away with saying it was off the road! (I'm not encouraging that, of course! It was just ehm... a fictional story, yes fictional, that'll do... :P)

beachlife I never heard of months bring split like that. Are you sure you are correct? To the very best of my knowledge if you were to go into the motor tax office today (as in the 26th of October) you would have to pay for the full month of October and would only get the car taxed up to the end of December if choosing to pay three months (This is assuming that your last tax ran out at the end of September, i.e. 09/09 on tax disc). Otherwise if the car was taxed up until end of October, i.e. 10/09 you and if you were to tax it for three months now you would be taxed up until 01/10. Never heard of the concept of them splitting months at the motor tax office to be honest. In the same scenario if you wanted to tax your car for three months and it ran out at end of September you could only get the three months up until end of 01/10 if you went into motor tax office on or after the 1st of November. You would have to declare on the motor tax proposal form that the car was off the the road for the month of October and this would need to be signed and stamped at a Garda station.

Why don't you just ask at the tax office. They tell you :)

Totally incorrect. Arrears are calculated in months only, and only for past months. 10% of yearly rate per month. The off-the-road declaration applies to whole months only.
