Just had a chance to look at the most recent Gazette. Not sure that they should be focusing on contentious and/or hypothetical issues, like their last cover story. I reckon they should focus on more day-to-day issues. And articles written by trainees???

Nah, the hypothetical stuff is pretty interesting. Obviously it's not of much practical assistance in terms of your day to day practice. You're pretty unlikely as a general practitioner to be involved in end of life issues unless it's an area you specialise in. But it's still worth reading about. It'd be pretty dull if the Gazette confined itself solely to examining the practical stuff. As for trainees, if they've something to contribute then by all means. Mind you I'd imagine that they wouldn't have have sufficient experience to write authoratively on things. I know I certainly didn't!

Otherwise I think the Gazette could do with a solicitors' wives section. In the centrefold, like.

    Why not on both counts?

The Gazette has a number of functions; surely to inform on a very interesting and topical area of law is one of them. Sure, it should also advise on issues of practical importance too, but it does that all the time. And why shouldn't it deal with contentious issues; should solicitors stay away from contentious issues...?!

As for trainees, again, why not? Fair enough, i wouldnt want a trainee doing an article on drafting an affidavit of discovery but euthanasia/end-of-life issues is a very academic-heavy subject and a trainee with good research and analytical skills should be well able to do this (and the article itself reflects this, IMO). You can also be sure that the trainee's partner would have reveiwed the article before it was submitted so its not like they would have just been taking a punt!

    I enjoyed it anyway!

Yeah, I suppose. I reckon I just thought that the James Bond theme in the euthanasia article was a bit smart-arsey. But then, they do that sort of thing all the time...

That article was actually written by a final year trainee from A&L...

But it'd be the people who produce the magazine who would come up with the title and headings, wouldn't it?
