    Hi,
    Hope everyone is good today.

Does anyone have any info on having a massage during pregnancy. I'm 17 weeks pregnant :) and have a voucher for a local spa and would love a pamper day

Some sites say massage are good and some differ.

Most advice is for you to avoid massage during your first trimester and towards the end of the pregnancy.

You should still use your pamper day but ensure that you tell the salon that you are pregnant. They can then make sure to avoid homeopathic oils which is an extremely important to do.

You can be massaged well even with a bump by sitting alongside the massage bed and leaning onto it over cushions. Ask for neck, back and shoulders or even an indian head massage would be lovely :D

You have to tell them that you are pregnant because there are areas like the webbing between your fingers and parts of your feet that if stimulated MAY cause uterine contractions which you certainly dont want at 17 weeks.

Hi my wife is about 7 to 8 weeks pregnant and regularly suffers with back pain, I normally like to help her by massaging, now that we are pregnant her back is starting to hurt even more.. is it safe to still massage her?? I don't have a clue of techniques or anything but she seems to get comfort out of it but i fear that i will do something to harm the baby . can anyone help?

I'm a massage therapist and specialise in pregnancy massage. If you live in the south-east, you could come along to one of my classes where I teach massage techniques to dads http://www.fromthewaters.com/prenatal_partners.htm

As a rule of thumb, pregnancy is a time to focus on relaxation and relieving stress, not for treating an underlining back problem. Do only light strokes on lower back (perhaps best avoid until 12 weeks) and on top of the shoulder (trapezius). A gentle loving touch with plain cold pressed oil (eg. almond, grapeseed, olive oil) would be much appreciated during pregnancy.

Your wife would benefit from seeing a professional during the pregnancy, a massage therapist, chiropractor or osteopath to treat the back pain.

I hope you all found the answers you were looking for already, but if not....

It's totally ok to get a massage throughout your entire pregnancy, just be sure to tell your therapist that you are pregnant. The two areas they would need to stay away from would be the webbing inbetween first finger and thumb, and your achilles tendon. These two places MIGHT cause a contraction, but then again, it might not. I was a massage therapist for many years, with my training done in the U.S. for a year and a half (they are very strict with the schooling for therapists!!). I had a friend who was 38 weeks pregnant, and BEGGED me to try anything to start contractions. I rubbed her achilles tendon, and it gave her about 3 contractions over a 30 minute period, but she didn't go into labour....they were more like bh contractions. Not that I recommend doing it, but I'm saying that even if it causes contractions, it doesn't necessarily mean it'll cause labour or miscarriage. Like I said, as long as you tell your therapist you're pregnant, you should be fine.
