If you're just talking about text, you can copy/paste from most PDF's provided their are not secured.

You can generally lift the images too, but I wouldn't place those in word!

If its to edit the text, generally, copy/paste works well.

Download.com has a few suggestions - click here.

Hi, copy and paste might destroy the original format.
Have you tried PDF to Word Converter? There are some free online services, like pdftoword.com or zamzar.com. But sometimes I don't trust online services, seems not that reliable, especially the personal or classified PDF files. And it take almost a day to get the generated PDF back.
Some offline converters are available, my favorite is AnyBizSoft PDF to Word Converter, it can retain original text, images, layouts, even protected PDF can be converted, you can have a try.

By the way, new here, hello everyone.

    Doesn't Google Docs support this?

    No install necessary!

Google doc is quite convenient, right?
Google Doc can save as PDF, but it can't convert PDF to Word.
