Disk Defrag Not Having Any Effect

My PC is about a year and a half old. The C: drive is a 40GB partition which has little other than my operating system (XP) installed on it.

I have run Auslogics Disk Defrag on it twice, followed by the standard Windows defragmenter. After the first run, total fragmentation reduced from about 22% to 18%. It has stayed at 18% since.

I have run Check Disk with the "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" box ticked. No report seems to have been generated so I assume no bad sectors were found.

My D: drive was defragmented without issue. What could be causing the problem?

In case it's any use... here is some of my hard drive's S.M.A.R.T. data from hddstatus.com:

is the drive quite full? If you have less than 15gig free defrags tend to be very hit and miss.

is either of the programs naming the culprits

might be the page file, try disabling it and running the defrag and re enabling it after

BTW defragging is poo, if its slow to boot, reduce startup programs or leave in s3 standby

if its slow running, reduce start up programs and add more ram

You need to look at the defrag logs and see which files are not being defragmented.
Often, the windows search index will not be defragmented so you could probably shut down that service first before running a defrag.
    Logs will tell you though.

No. 40GB partition size, 28.5GB free space.

Lol, I have but 5 items active in startup. Also, 4GB OCZ PC2-6400 ram.

Will try disabling page file and re-running defrag when I get the chance.

Removing the (4GB) page file and defragmenting worked a treat. Cheers. :)

According to the Auslogics report, "fragmentation before" was 1.34% whereas windows pegged it at 18%. Strange.
